Keeping a research log is one of the most important things a genealogist can do. Hobby or expert, this is something that every family historian should be doing. There is no one item that goes further to organize research.
A research log is a simple document that allows you to make note of the places that you look for records. It helps prevent you from wasting research time by looking for the same document in the same place.
Each research session should begin with your research log and a research plan. With this strategy it will be easier to get the most out of every research session.

That’s such a good trip. I found it out the hard way after spending a few hours looking through a baptism register at my local archives. I came across an unusual name & realised I’d been through the register before!

I learned this lesson the hard way too. It is so easy to skip the research log but it really needs to be a part of every research session to save time in the long run. Organization is my nemesis so I have to really stay on top of myself on this one.

Me too! I’ve started keeping a kind of diary too of what I’ve looked at each day. Then if I have to have a break from research it’s easy to remember where I got to so I can pick up where I left off.
